تعالج هذه الدراسة صورة التاريخ الأموي كما عرضها المستشرق الهولندي فان فلوتن في كتابه السيادة العربية والشيعة والإسرائيليات. وقد اعتمدت الدراسة المنهج الوصفي التاريخي في تتبّع آراء فان فلوتن، وتحليل منهجيته، وربطها بالسياق العام لحركة الاستشراق، يفتتح الفصل الأول بعرضٍ معمّق لحركة الاستشراق، موضّحًا نشأتها وتطورها وأهدافها الفكرية والسياسية، وصولًا إلى بيان أثرها في تشكيل التصورات الغربية عن التاريخ الإسلامي. أمّا الفصل الثاني فيتناول سيرة فان فلوتن وحياته العلمية القصيرة، مع تقديم وصف تحليلي لكتابه ومكانته ضمن الإنتاج الاستشراقي في مطلع القرن العشرين، وفي الفصل الثالث تستعرض الدراسة، بالاعتماد على المنهج الوصفي التاريخي، تحليلات فان فلوتن للتاريخ الأموي، من خلال تفكيك مقولاته الأساسية ورصد كيفية بنائه للرواية التاريخية اعتمادًا على مصادر محدّدة وتفسيرات خاصة. ويأتي الفصل الرابع ليركّز على تقييم أدوات فان فلوتن البحثية ومنهجيته في التعامل مع المصادر، ناقدًا الأسس التي انطلقت منها تحليلاته، ومبيّنًا ارتباطها بالخلفية الاستشراقية القائمة على النزعة الفوقية والتأثيرات الاستعمارية. وينتهي الفصل إلى كشف أوجه القصور في تفسيراته للتاريخ الأموي، وربطها بالإشكالات المنهجية الشائعة في الدراسات الاستشراقية في تلك المرحلة |

This study examines the portrayal of Umayyad history as presented by the Dutch orientalist Van Vloten in his work Arab Dominion and the Shi?a, and the Israelite Narratives. The research employs the descriptive?historical method to trace Van Vloten?s views, analyze his methodological approach, and situate his interpretations within the broader context of Orientalist scholarship. The first chapter provides an in-depth overview of the Orientalist movement, outlining its emergence, development, and intellectual and political aims, and highlighting its influence on the Western construction of Islamic historical narratives. The second chapter explores Van Vloten?s short academic life and his scholarly background, offering an analytical description of his book and assessing its place within early twentieth-century Orientalist literature. The third chapter, following the descriptive?historical method, examines Van Vloten?s analyses of Umayyad history by deconstructing his principal claims and tracing the manner in which he constructs his historical narrative based on selected sources and particular interpretive assumptions. The fourth chapter evaluates Van Vloten?s research tools and methodological approaches, critically engaging with the foundations upon which his analyses were built and demonstrating their connection to the broader Orientalist framework characterized by intellectual superiority and colonial attitudes. The chapter concludes by identifying the shortcomings in his interpretations of Umayyad history and linking these weaknesses to the methodological issues that marked Orientalist studies of that period |
