This comparative analysis delves into the feminist themes, gender disparities, and instances of domestic violence confronted by female protagonists in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and Sarah Kane's Blasted. Employing a descriptive approach, this study will gather data from these literary works and subject them to qualitative scrutiny through textual analysis. The examination will draw on Judith Butler's resistance theory and feminist consciousness theory for the analytical framework. Anticipated findings are as follows: This research embarks on a profound exploration of the tumultuous and estranged worlds inhabited by the protagonists in A Streetcar Named Desire, who is in perpetual pursuit of self-discovery. The thesis employs Blanche's presence as a poignant symbol of tragic circumstances, delineating her transformation from a once-refined lady into a destitute, embattled soul ensnared by alcoholism. The contrasting settings of Blanche's ancestral home in Belle Reve and her sister's abode in New Orleans serve as dual canvases illustrating the realms this study aims to scrutinize. Regarding the insights derived from Blasted, the findings will spotlight the subjugation experienced by its female characters and the ensuing shifts in their awareness and conduct. For instance, the character ' Cate ' endures brutality and mistreatment from her lover ' Ian,' whose professed love stands in stark contradiction to his actions. The play starkly portrays the sexual violence inflicted upon Ian and Cate. Ultimately, Ian's behavior towards Cate transforms in response to his vacillating sentiments. The study will advocate for further research into the impact of feminist awareness on women's behavior across a broader range of literary works |
