عندما لم يستطع المنهج البنوي في اللغويات الإجابة عن تساؤلاتٍ تتعلق بالقدرة الفطرية للبشر أو مستخدمي اللغة في إنشاء تعابير لغوية إبداعية كالتعابير المجازية، بدت اللغويات الفكرية قادرةً على إثبات الوظيفة الجليّة للبنية الأساسية في عقل الإنسان حيث تجري هذه العمليات الفكرية. يتميّز الموهوبون دائماً عندما يظهرون قدرتهم على رسم صورٍ في أذهان الناس من حولهم عن طريق اللغة، فلذلك، مهما كان الحافز وراء ذلك، وبغض النظّر عن الأفكار التي ترمي إليها فإنها حتماً تترك أثراً لافتاً على المستمع والقرّاء.
لقد لعبت التعابير المجازية دوراً هاماً في الخطابة والصحافة والسياسة والسياقات الدينية وحتّى في شتى مجالات الحياة، وفي ذات الوقت، لم يخلو التعليق الرياضي والتقارير الرياضية من تلك التعابير المجازية الاصطلاحية المألوفة أو تلك التي تكون وليدة اللحظة كما هو الحال للمعلّق الرّياضي التونسي عصام الشّوالي. لقدّ شكلت النظرية المعاصرة للتعابير المجازية خلفية متينة للباحثين الذين يرمون إلى دراسة وتحليل بنية وتركيبة التعابير المجازية المستخدمة يوميّاً من الناحية الفكرية.
تتعقّب الدراسات الرئيسية التي يحاول هذا البحث التركيز عليها تطوير نظرية التعابير المجازية ويحاول إثبات العلاقة التفاعلية بين النظرية السيمائية ونظرية التعابير المجزية الفكرية المستخدمة من قبل المعلّق الريّاضي التونسي عصام الشّوالي.

When structuralism could not answer questions related to the innate ability of human beings to produce creative linguistic expressions such as metaphors, cognitive sciences have emerged to demonstrate the significant function of the underlying structure all humans possess. Those humans always excel genuinely when they show their ability in drawing pictures in other people?s minds by means of language; therefore, whatever the motivation behind these inventive pictures is, there must be a remarkable effect on the readers or the hearers.
Metaphors have always played a prominent role in rhetoric, media, politics, religious speeches/texts and even in everyday language use; at the same time, sports commentaries and reports are not devoid of conventional and non-conventional metaphors. The Tunisian soccer commentator Issam Chaouali, as a case study, has excelled in the world of Arab football commentary for using creative metaphors. Therefore, examining his metaphors from a semiotic point of view would show how he remarkably creates these metaphors.
The major studies mentioned in this research trace the evolution of the conceptual metaphor theories and demonstrate the interaction between semiotics and the conceptual blending in metaphors used by Issam Chaouali where the findings are highlighted in the following hypotheses:
1- The use of metaphors in soccer games is a creative communicative strategy and can make the commentator popular.
2- Metaphors used in soccer games are widely known and understood by the audience, yet Issam Chaouali, as a case study, creates his own metaphors based on specific cultural backgrounds, which makes his descriptions pleasurable.
3- Studying metaphors from a semiotic perspective and in relation to the blending theory can provide a systematic understanding of the cognitive semiotic aspects of metaphorical language.
4- Metaphors are the result of a conceptual blending where the inputs are primarily iconic signs. Creating metaphors is a purely cognitive process where the context and the cultural backgrounds help in producing these metaphors
