تعيد هذه الرسالة النظر في مسرحية "يهودي مالطا" لكرستوفر مارلو ومسرحية"عطيل" لوليام شكسبير من خلال عدسة دو بويز ونظريته "الوعي المزدوج". ورغم حداثة هذه النظرية بالمقارنة مع أعمال مارلو و شكسبير ورغم أنها تشكلت لتعكس شيئا من حياة السود, إلا أن هذه الدراسة توظفها لاختبار وتحليل ازدواجية الشخصيات في سياقات عرقية مختلفة في الأعمال المذكورة سابقا. وستشمل هذه الدراسة مقدمة وفصلين وخاتمة. تستعرض المقدمة قضية العنصرية وكيف تطورت اجتماعيا وثقافيا عبر القرون ودفعت دو بويز لتقديم نظرية ازدواجية الوعي, من ثم تعرض مراجعة لدراسات سابقة. ويناقش الفصل الأول إزدواجية الوعي في شخصية براباس وايثامور وشخصيات مسيحية مختارة من مسرحية "يهودي مالطا" لكريستوفر مارلو. ومن ثم يناقش الفصل الثاني إزدواجية الوعي في شخصية عطيل واياغو في مسرحية "عطيل" للكاتب ويليام شكسبير. هذا وتبني الخاتمة على ما سبق لتحديد مدى أهمية نظرية ازدواجية الوعي وإمكانية تطبيقها على عصور وحضارات مختلفة. |

This thesis examines Christopher Marlow's The Jew of Malta and William Shakespeare's Othello through the lens of W. E. B. Du Bois and his theory of double consciousness. Although Du Bois? theory is relatively recent when compared to the works of Marlowe and Shakespeare, and although this theory originally has dealt with African American studies, it might be applied to various racial groups that we see on Renaissance drama. In other words, my research adopts new tools- represented in Du Bois? theory- to explore the ?other? in Marlowe?s and Shakespeare?s aforementioned plays. This study is divided into an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction deals with racism and how it has developed over time until De Bois' presented his theory of ?double consciousness.? It also presents related literature. The first chapter applies Du Bois? concept and theory of ?double consciousness? to Barabas, and other selected Christian Characters in Christopher Marlow's The Jew of Malta. The Jews of Marlowe, along with Christians and Muslims seem all to have various or doubled personalities which vary from one racial context to another as depicted by Marlowe. The second chapter applies ?double consciousness? to William Shakespeare's Othello. The analysis includes the characters of Iago and Othello in this play and shows their doubled personality in various contexts |
