الملخص بالانجليزي
This study aims at investigating the types of expressive speech acts in Jordanian Arabic compliment expressions (Henceforth JACE) used by the English language Department students at Al al-Bayt University, and thus to identify the most frequent types of these expressions, and to explore the pragmatic motivations behind their frequency. Discourse Completion Test (DCT) via questionnaire is used in data gathering to study the strategies employed when students respond to compliment expressions (Henceforth CE) by Jordanian native speakers of Arabic. A total of 50 English language Department students participates in the current study. Fifty questionnaires are distributed to examine informants' responses to CE. Austin and Searle?s assumptions of speech acts and categorizations are conducted as a framework in the data analysis. The results show that there are twelve types of compliments according to Herbert's (1990) types of compliments which are divided into three basic categories: agreement, non-agreement and other interpretations: agreement is divided into acceptance and non-acceptance. Acceptance is used 442 times with the percentage of 59.1%. Non-acceptance is used 43 times, with the percentage of 5.7%. With regard to disagreement, the frequency of occurrence is 262 times with the percentage of 35%. And other Interpretations, the frequency of occurrence is 3 times with the percentage of .3%. Moreover, the research has found that the dominant type of compliment is appreciation token. It is also found that there are eleven types of expressive speech acts employed in this study which are agreement, disagreement, welcoming, thanking, deploring, volition, apologizing, attitude, wishing, exclamation, and congratulation. More specifically, it is found that agreement type of expressive speech acts is the most frequent used type which is presented 230 times with the percentage of 31.0%, followed by disagreement which is presented 213 times with the percentage of 28.4%, and thanking which is presented 152 with the percentage of 20%. It is also found that there are many functions behind the motivation related to the CE? use: expressing thankfulness, displaying gratefulness emotions, expressing friendly emotions, offering something to the addressee, praying for the addressee, increasing self-confidence, avoiding self-praise, and expressing confirmation on the idea
