The effect of the olive pomace flour addition on the mechanical, morphological, thermal and water uptake properties of Polypropylene (PP), with and without the use of five commercially available maleic anhydride based coupling agents, (Fusabond P353, Fusabond P613, Fusabond E226, Fusabond E100, Fusabond M603), was investigated. This study focuses on the polymer composites filled with the olive pomace flour. In the present work the test specimens were prepared with different ratios of mixtures that contain polypropylene (PP), 20 wt. % olive pomace flour and five commercially available maleic anhydride based coupling agents in the following weight percentages: 0%, 1%, 5% and 10%. The mechanical, morphological, thermal and water uptake properties of PP matrix composites were measured after production of specimens using a parallel co-rotating twin screw extruder, a compression molding device, a computer control electrical universal testing machine (WDW-5) and a digital display Izod impact testing machine (FI-68). The specimens were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Among the results of these studies were the following: A higher percent of a coupling agent consistently yielded a greater impact strength for the composite. For all coupling agents the greatest impact strength was achieved with a 10% load of the agent. The following properties of the OPF/PP composite were consistently improved with all of the coupling agents: tensile stress at yield, tensile stress at rupture, tensile strain at yield, tensile strain at break and Young?s modulus. The initial addition of OPF to pure PP had consistently reduced these properties, thus proving the utility of the coupling agents. The maximum flexural stress and the flexural strain of the maximum force followed the similar pattern of the previous properties. Adding OPF to PP decreased the flexural properties and the subsequent addition of any coupling agent increased them. Water uptake, however, demonstrated different behavior. The initial addition of OPF to PP increased the water uptake property. The subsequent addition of a coupling agent decreased it. The results of this study demonstrated that olive pomace flour could be used as a viable reinforcement for PP, providing good mechanical and morphological properties, as long as an appropriate coupling agent is added to the composite
