This thesis examines John Updike's misrepresentation of Islam in his novel Terrorist. The study argues that Updike misrepresents Islam under three main domains: Islam as violent faith, Islam as an anti-woman creed and Islam as a religion of fantasy and imagination. This three-fold biased strategy is built upon Updike's selective and out of context quoting from the holly Qur'an as well the camouflaged manipulative attitudes of the characters. The study will rely on postcolonial and feminist methodologies to uncover Updike's vicious anti-Islam ideology and style. The thesis will include an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion. The introduction surveys (mis) repres- entations of Islam in American literature before and after 9/11 and reviews the related literature. Chapter One will deal with Updike?s misrepresentation of Islam as a violent religion and Chapter Two will discuss Updike?s misrepresentation of Islam as an anti-woman faith and as a religion of fantasy and imagination. The conclusion will build on the findings of chapters one and two to underline the basic components of Updike's anti-Islam perspective along with his manipulative biased style
