تتفحص هذه الرسالة عملية تشويه الإسلام التي يقوم بها الكاتب جون أبدايك في روايته الإرهابي. وتناقش الرسالة كيف أن هذا التشويه يقع في ثلاث جوانب رئيسة، هي: الإسلام كدين للإرهاب والعنف، الإسلام كعقيدة معادية للأنثى والإسلام باعتباره دينا للوهم والخيال. وتتبنى هذه الدراسة منهجية أدب ما بعد الاستعمار بالإضافة إلى المنهج النسوي. وستشمل الدراسة على مقدمة وفصلين وخاتمة. تستعرض المقدمة عمليات تقديم و تشويه الإسلام في الأدب الأمريكي قبل وبعد أحداث 11/9 ومن ثم تقدم مراجعة للدراسات السابقة. ويناقش الفصل الأول تشويه الإسلام في الرواية على انه دين إرهاب وعنف و من ثم يناقش الفصل الثاني تشويه الإسلام باعتباره عقيدة معادية للأنثى و دينا للوهم والخيال. هذا و تبني الخاتمة على ما سبق لتحديد الجوانب الأساسية لرؤية أبدايك المعادية للإسلام بالإضافة إلى أسلوبه التلاعبي والمتحيز. |

This thesis examines John Updike's misrepresentation of Islam in his novel Terrorist. The study argues that Updike misrepresents Islam under three main domains: Islam as violent faith, Islam as an anti-woman creed and Islam as a religion of fantasy and imagination. This three-fold biased strategy is built upon Updike's selective and out of context quoting from the holly Qur'an as well the camouflaged manipulative attitudes of the characters. The study will rely on postcolonial and feminist methodologies to uncover Updike's vicious anti-Islam ideology and style. The thesis will include an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion. The introduction surveys (mis) repres- entations of Islam in American literature before and after 9/11 and reviews the related literature. Chapter One will deal with Updike?s misrepresentation of Islam as a violent religion and Chapter Two will discuss Updike?s misrepresentation of Islam as an anti-woman faith and as a religion of fantasy and imagination. The conclusion will build on the findings of chapters one and two to underline the basic components of Updike's anti-Islam perspective along with his manipulative biased style |
