(Reverso and After the Deadline).
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of online checker on improving EFL learners' writing performance and error type. Furthermore, the study sought to explore which online checker is more effective in teaching writing skill. Participants of the study were 80 ninth grade students at Ali Bin Abi Talib School for Boys in Mafraq Directorate of Education in Jordan during the second semester of the academic year 2014/2015. Students were randomly chosen and assigned into four groups, three experimental and one control. Each experimental group used an online checker different from the other group while the control group was taught using regular instruction by the same teacher. A pre-post-test to measure students' performance in writing was administered to all students who participated in the study. Its validity and reliability were verified. Relevant statistical analyses related to means, standard deviations, and one-way ANOVA test were used The findings of the study showed that computer-assisted writing (CAW) programs are found to offer a great opportunity in teaching and learning writing skill than the regular instructional method. In addition, the online automated rater Ginger affects participants? performance more positively in writing skill than the online word processor Reverso and the online word processor After the Deadline. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences between the online automated rater Ginger, the online word processor Reverso, and the online word processor After the Deadline in misspelled words, misused words, relative clauses, fragments or run-ons, capitalization and negation in favor of Ginger. However, all programs developed the other error type (verb phrases, subject-verb agreement, questions, punctuation, noun phrases, and plural and possessives) in the same degree. Finally, a number of related recommendations were presented to teachers, researchers, and the Ministry of Education
