1. OBJECTIVES

a) General objectives:

 

- enabling the students to work together in a co-operative way

- getting the students to know about cultural differences and analogies between their country and the target language country, developing:

i) a sociolinguistic competence (sensitivity to social conventions, rules of politeness, norms governing relations between generations, sexes, classes and social groups, etc.)

ii) a sociocultural knowledge about everyday living, living conditions, interpersonal relations, etc.

 

b) Specific learning objectives:

 

AT THE END OF THE SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS WILL  BE ABLE TO:

 

- understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.

- understand and give directions and instructions

- communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters

- describe aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need

- simply describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

- understand and write a simple personal letter

 

2. Syllabus

a) linguistic functions: Asking/talking about past actions, describing past activities. Talking about the future. Making plans. Proposing to do something. Asking/giving directions using modal verbs. Talking about habits in the past. Talking about duration in the past. Contrasting actions and states in the past. Making hypothesis (type 1). Expressing opinions. Giving reasons. Talking about one’s tastes. Locating things in the space.

b) Phonetics and intonation: reading aloud.

c)Grammar: Past tenses: passato prossimo, imperfetto. Different endings of the past participle with the auxiliary verb “to be”. Future meaning of present simple. Future simple. Reflexive and pronominal verbs. More about prepositions.

If-clause type 1. Modal verbs.

d) Lexical areas: At a coffee bar, television programmes, everyday activities, hobbies and pastimes, jobs.  

e) Civilization: topics connected with everyday life.

4. GRADING POLICY

 

There are two tests and a final exam.

The tests include grammar exercises (where correctness is required) and communicative ones (where evaluation will essentially take into account the ability of the student to successfully convey the wanted message). 

Participation is also evaluated in terms of regular presence, active participation in the lessons and in the conversation classes, regular production of the requested individual homework.

 

The evaluation components will carry the following weights:

1. Test 1: 20% + 5% participation

2. Test 2: 20% + 5% participation

3. Final test: 50%
