1. OBJECTIVES

 

a) General objectives:

 

- enabling the students to work together in a co-operative way

- getting the students to know about cultural differences and analogies between their country and the target language country, developing:

i) a sociolinguistic competence (sensitivity to social conventions, rules of politeness, norms governing relations between generations, sexes, classes and social groups, etc.)

ii) a sociocultural knowledge about everyday living, living conditions, interpersonal relations, etc.

 

 

b) Specific learning objectives:

 

AT THE END OF THE FIRST SEMESTER, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

 

- understand enough to be able to meet needs of a concrete type provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated

- understand phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate priority (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

- understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.

- understand short simple personal letters.

- communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters to do with work and free time.

- make an introduction and use basic greeting and leave-taking expressions

- ask and answer questions about themselves and other people, where they live, people they know, things they have.

- indicate time

- reply in an interview to simple direct personal questions

- ask for or pass on personal details in written form, fill in a form.

- describe people, places and possessions in simple terms.

- describe him/herself, what he/she does and where he/she lives.

- ask for permission

- talk about duties and abilities

 

 

2. SYLLABUS

 

a) linguistic functions: Basic greeting and leave-taking expressions (formal/informal); introducing oneself; asking/telling one’s name, age, address, telephone number, nationality, marital status; spelling one’s name; asking and talking about one’s family; asking and talking about jobs; asking and talking about habits; asking and talking about the weather; asking and telling the time; describing a person; locating things in the space (introd.); asking and talking about frequencies; asking for permission; asking and talking about duties, abilities; talking about quantities; talking about aims. Contrasting formal/informal style.

b) Phonetics and intonation: the alphabet, distinctive vowels, the sounds “gn” and “gl”, the function of “h” after “c” and “g”, asking questions using intonation.

c) Grammar: Pronouns. “To be” and “to have”. Question form. Singular and plural of nouns, adjectives, definite and indefinite articles, possessives. Present tense of all regular verbs and of the most frequent irregular ones. Modal verbs. Wh-words in Italian. Prepositions and the combination of preposition and articles.

d) Lexical areas: Countries and nationalities, the family, jobs, school, places, physical appearance, meals, parts of the day, days of the week, months, numbers.

e) Civilization: geography and topics connected with everyday life.

4. GRADING POLICY

 

There are two tests and a final exam.

The tests include grammar exercises (where correctness is required) and communicative ones (where evaluation will essentially take into account the ability of the student to successfully convey the wanted message). 

Participation is also evaluated in terms of regular presence, active participation in the lessons and in the conversation classes, regular production of the requested individual homework.

 

The evaluation components will carry the following weights:

1. Test 1: 20% + 5% participation

2. Test 2: 20% + 5% participation

3. Final test: 50%
